Tall BeardedIris or TBs are at least 27" and some are over 4' tall. These are the kings of the iris world. They are tall and stately with large flowers.
Medians are smaller iris. This group is made up of Border Bearded, BB, Intermediate Bearded, IB, Miniature Tall Bearded, MTB, Standard Dwarf Bearded, SDB, and Miniature Dwarf Bearded, MTB. The group is defined by the size of the plant, flower, and/or bloom time.
Border Bearded bloom with the TBs. They are between 16" and 271/2" with larger flowers.
Intermediate Bearded bloom before the TBs and BBs and after the SDBs. They are proportionately smaller stature than the BBs. They range in height from 16" to 271/2".
Miniature Tall Bearded or Table Iris bloom the same time as the TBs. Grace and proportion describes this group. They have small wiry stems which branch and hold the small flowers so a clump resembles a cloud of butterflies. They are very good for flower arrangements.
Standard Dwarf Bearded bloom before the TBs, BBs, and overlap the beginning of the IBs' bloomtime. They are short in height standing between 8" and 16" with large flowers.
Historicsare any irises 30 years old or older than their registration date. These are the parents and grandparents of modern iris and should be cherished for the contributions they have given us. Please don't let these wonderful iris fade into obscurity. Quanities are limited so order early.
Space Agers & Noveltiesiris which are alittle different. Some have horns, flounces, and spoon shaped appendages out of their horns. Some iris in this group have broken color patterns, variagated foliage, and still others are flat and don't look like iris at all.
Arils & Arilbreds-Arils are iris from the arid portions of the Middle East, Asia and Southern Europe. Arilbreds are iris derived from crossing Arils with bearded iris either TB or Medians. Pure Arils demand perfect drainage and go dormant during the heat of the summer and do not want any water during their dormancy. Arilbreds are less demanding and many can grow in regular flower beds. The range of colors and markings are incredible on this group of iris.
Spurias are stately iris which thrive on the heat and the sun. They are beardless iris with rigid disease resistant foliage. They have an incredible range of colors with heights with some reaching heights of 5'. Not all Spuria are giants some are less than 18"
Water Iris are water and bog iris. Their colors rival the birds. They will happily grow in your pond, washtub or moist flower bed.
Speciesare wild irises that have been grown from seed or collected in Europe, Asia, China, Japan, and North America.. They are more challenging to grow but if native growing conditions can be imitated their delicate beauty is more than worth the effort. Quanities are always limited.
